Black Walder ... that one was not named for the colour of his beard, I promise you.
— Robb Stark

Black Walder Frey is the second son of Ser Ryman Frey, the brother of Edwyn Frey and Petyr Frey, and the great grandson of Lord Walder Frey. He is an anointed knight of House Frey. He refuses to marry and, supposedly, has maintained relationships with the wives of his brothers and even with relatives, such as Amarei Frey and Fair Walda Frey. He has a very foul disposition.

History[]

Black walder has a mutual animosity for his brother Edwyn, due to the two being rivals over inheritance of the Twins and possibly because of Black Walder's supposed affair with Edwyn's wife. Black Walder also supposedly maintained an affair with lord Walder Frey's seventh wife, Annara Farring.

Books[]

A Clash of Kings[]

Black Walder heads to The Westerlands to fight for Robb Stark with his father, Ryman.

A Storm of Swords[]

He scales the walls of the Crag with Smalljon Umber. He is amongst the Freys that depart Robb's cause after he marries Jeyne Westerling and not the Frey girl he was betrothed to. Robb specifically states Black Walder as being difficult to deal with.

He rides out with his father and brothers to welcome Robb to the Twins for the wedding of Lord Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey. Robb is surprised by Black Walder's lambish behavior. During the Red Wedding he kills a Vance who had attacked Ser Harys Haigh. He then rides out to Seagard and forces Lord Jason Mallister into surrender by threatening to execute his son and heir, Patrek Mallister.
