The Pact of the Isle of Faces is an ancient event that took place over 10,000 years before the start of the books, between the First Men and the Children of the Forest. It was a decision to live in peace that occurred after years of vicious fighting. The Children were given domain over the forests, and the First Men were given domain over "open lands". Faces were carved into the weirwood trees on the island, which gave it the name Isle of Faces.
