Longclaw is the Valyrian steel bastard sword of Jon Snow. The sword is the former ancestral weapon of House Mormont. It had been given by Jeor Mormont to his heir Ser Jorah Mormont, but Jorah had left it behind when he went into exile.

Appearance[]

Longclaw is a hand-and-a-half sword (also called abastard sword), It has a bear's head for the pommel, but Jeor has a stonecarving builder of the Night's Watch replace the hilt with one capped by a snarling wolf's head of pale stone with chips of garnet for the eyes.  It is also weighted with lead to give better balance.

A Game of Thrones[]

The Lord Commander of the Night's Watch gives the sword to his steward, Jon Snow, after Jon saves him from a wight. It is a hand-and-a-half sword (also called a bastard sword).

The sword was damaged in the fire that killed the wight, and the pommel was destroyed. The pommel had been of a bear, but Jeor had it replaced with a white wolf with red eyes, before giving it to Jon so it would reflect Stark's heritage. He remarks that the name Longclaw equally applies to a wolf as to a bear.
