House Hornwood is a noble house of the North. Their seat is Hornwood. They are amongst the principal bannermen sworn to House Stark of Winterfell. Their sigil is a bull moose on an orange field. Their house words are Righteous in Wrath.The head of the house at the start of the books is Lord Halys Hornwood.

History[]

Lord Hornwood declared for the Blacks during the Dance of the Dragons, and joined his lord, Cregan Stark, in marching south to King's Landing. His younger son disappeared in Flea Bottom during the Hour of the Wolf.

After the Dance was done, Hallis Hornwood joined with Timotty Snow to form the Wolf Pack.

Members of House Hornwood were present for the Tourney of Harrenhal.

A Game of Thrones[]

Halys Hornwood answers the call to arms by Robb Stark, and comes to Winterfell with his armies. He asks for the return of a holdfast taken from his grandfather, hunting privileges, and to be allowed to dam the White Knife whilst at Winterfell.

When the Northern armies split at The Twins, Lord Halys goes with Roose Bolton, whilst his heir, Daryn, goes with Robb. Halys leads Hornwood troops during the Battle of the Green Fork, where he is slain. Daryn is a part of his king's personal guard during the Battle of the Whispering Wood, during which he is killed by Ser Jaime Lannister.

A Clash of Kings[]

Lady Donella Hornwood, Halys' widow, now holds the title of Lady of the Hornwood, though a succession crisis ensues. Marriages between Donella and Wyman Manderly or Mors Umber are both suggested, but rejected. It is suggested that Beren Tallhart, Halys' nephew, take the Hornwood name and inherit the titles, whilst another candidate is Larence Snow, Halys' bastard son, who is fostered by Galbart Glover at Deepwood Motte.

Before it can be resolved, Donella is kidnapped by Ramsay Snow, the Bastard of Bolton, and is forced into marrying her captor. Lady Donella is locked away in a tower and left unfed. She is eventually discovered dead, with blood around her mouth, and her fingers chewed off.

Some Hornwood men join Ser Rodrik Cassel when he attempts to retake Winterfell from Theon Greyjoy. However, Ramsay betrays Rodrik, kills him, scatters the army, and sacks Winterfell.

A Storm of Swords[]

Deepwood Motte is seized by Ironborn raiders, and Larence Snow is held prisoner by Asha Greyjoy.

A Dance with Dragons[]

Part of the deal to see House Manderly surrender to the Iron Throne requires for Wyman to abandon his claim to the lands and titles of House Hornwood. At his wedding to 'Arya Stark', Ramsay is announced as the Lord of the Hornwood.Lady Barbrey Dustin tells Theon that the Hornwood men at Winterfell had not forgotten what Ramsay had done to Lady Donella.

Stannis Baratheon write to Jon Snow to tell him that some Hornwood survivors from the Battle at Winterfell have joined his army. Stannis later liberates Larence Snow when he retakes Deepwood Motte.
