House Florent is a noble house from The Reach and a principal vassal of House Baratheon of Dragonstone. Their ancestral seat is Brightwater Keep. The head of the house at the start of the novels is Lord Alester Florent. Their sigil is a red fox surrounded by blue roses on ermine. Members of the house are often described as having prominent ears.

History[]

Like House Peake and House Ball, the Florents, according to legends, are the descendants of the offspring of one of the three husbands of Florys the Fox, a daughter of Garth Greenhand.

The Florents claim descent from the extinct House Gardener, who ruled over the Reach prior to the War of Conquest. King Aegon I Targaryen named House Tyrell overlords of the Reach, but the Florents felt that they had a better claim to Highgarden.

Ser Arlan and Duncan the Tall served Lord Florent for a time prior to the Tourney at Ashford Meadow. Lord Florent had been blind. Ser Aladore and Ser Jon Florent were present at the tourney. Ser Eustace Osgrey says that maids of House Osgrey once used to marry men of House Florent.

Selyse Florent was wed to the brother of the new King after Robert's Rebellion. Her cousin, Delena Florent, was despoiled by King Robert I Baratheon, and they had a bastard son, Edric Storm. Tywin Lannister would seek to marry his youngest son, Tyrion Lannister, to Delena, but her father, Ser Colin Florent, refused and instead Delena married Hosman Norcross.

Selyse would give birth to the only child of her marriage with Stannis Baratheon, a girl named Shireen Baratheon. Selyse's father, Ser Ryam Florent, died from a fall from a horse. Ser Axell Florent served as the Castellan of Dragonstone for ten years, whilst Stannis served on the Small council.
