House Flint of the mountains is the formal name given to the Flint mountain clan, who reside in the high mountains north of the Wolfswood. They like to be referred to as the First Flints, as House Flint of Widow's Watch and House Flint of Flint's Finger are said to be cadet branches. The head of the house styles themselves as 'The Flint', though at Winterfell they would formally be referred to as Lord Flint.

History[]

House Flint of Breakstone Hill ruled as First Men kings after the Long Night, before being reduced to vassalage by House Stark. It is unknown if the Flints of the mountain clans are the descendants of this house.

It is suggested that the Night's King may have been a Flint, amongst other possibilities. Lord Commander Rodrik Flint is regarded as one of the worst commanders in the history of the Night's Watch, for trying to style himself as King-Beyond-the-Wall. One of the tragic stories surrounding the Nightfort is about the rape and murder of brave young Danny Flint.

A branch of House Flint held the Wolf's Den for a century after the death of House Greystark.

The Flints of the hills aided Lord Cregan Stark in hunting down the free folk raiders of Sylas the Grim.

Lord Eddard Stark's grandmother, Arya Flint, was a Flint of the mountains. Old Nan used to tell Bran Stark that it was her blood that compelled him to climb so foolishly.

The lands of the Flints have been subjected to raids by wildlings led by the Weeper.

A Dance with Dragons[]

The Flints join Stannis Baratheon in his campaign to take the North back from the Ironborn and Roose Bolton. They aspire to rescue Ned's daughter, 'Arya Stark' (actually Jeyne Poole) from captivity. Stannis is joined by Donnel and Artos Flint, both sons of Lord Torghen Flint, for his march on Winterfell.

Lord Torghen visits Castle Black for the wedding of Alys Karstark and Sigorn of Thenn. The Flint and The Norrey are both wary of Jon Snow's plan to settle wildlings in the Gift.
