Ser Hosteen Frey is a knight of House Frey and the sixth son of Lord Walder Frey, his first with Amarei Crakehall. He is a fierce fighter and a seasoned soldier. He serves under Roose Bolton during the War of the Five Kings.
He is married to Bellena Hawick, with whom he has one son, Ser Arwood Frey. He has four grandchildren, Ryella, Androw, Alyn and Hostella Frey.

He rides at the Tourney of Lannisport and is unhorsed by the eventual champion, Ser Jorah Mormont.

He attends the Hand's Tourney in King's Landing, but is unhorsed by Ser Loras Tyrell. He is nearby when Catelyn Stark brings news of the alliance between House Stark and House Frey to Robb Stark.
A Clash of Kings[]
He is being held at Harrenhal after being captured by House Lannister. He may be one of four Frey knights that Arya Stark witnesses being ransomed.
A Storm of Swords[]
He is present at Harrenhal when Ser Jaime Lannister arrives, after having been captured by the Brave Companions. He also attends the Red Wedding, being tasked with killing Lucas Blackwood, the son of Lord Tytos Blackwood.
A Dance with Dragons[]
Hosteen is sent north, with his brother Ser Aenys Frey, to command the Frey force assisting Roose Bolton in The North. He loses an ear to frostbite. He attends the wedding of Jeyne Poole (disguised as Arya Stark) and Ramsay Bolton. He initially believes that Theon Greyjoy is responsible for the murders at Winterfell, but soon accuses Lord Wyman Manderly instead. After the murder of his nephew, Little Walder Frey, he accuses Wyman again, who replies with an insult and a denial. Hosteen attacks Wyman, and would have killed him had if not been for White Harbor knights. Roose Bolton places him in the vanguard of the army marching to meet Stannis Baratheon.
