Harlaw is one of the islands that make up the archipelago of the Iron Islands. It is ruled by House Harlaw from their ancestral seat of Ten Towers.

Location[]

Harlaw is to the northeast of Pyke, from where it is a day's sail, and southeast of Orkmont and Blacktyde. It is across the Ironman's Bay from Banefort.

Economy[]

Harlaw is the second largest of the Iron Islands. It is both the wealthiest of the islands, and the one with the densest population. It is known for it's shaggy ponies, which are used across the Iron Islands. Lead, iron, and tin are mined from the island.

Houses[]

The Harlaws rule over the island that gives them their name. They have five seats on the island. The senior branch holds Ten Towers, currently held by Rodrik Harlaw, then there is Harlaw Hall, held by old Sigfryd Harlaw, Grey Garden, presided over by Ser Harras Harlaw, Harridan Hill, property of Boremund Harlaw, and the Tower of Glimmering, which is the seat of Hotho Harlaw.

Other houses on the island are all sworn to Ten Towers. They include House Kenning, House Myre, House Stonetree, and House Volmark.

History[]

There used to be extensive forests on Harlaw, but they were all chopped down so that the Ironborn could build ships. Ships from Harlaw began to trade at Lannisport, Oldtown, and the Free Cities during the reign of House Hoare.

Qhorin Volmark tried to name himself the next King of the Iron Islands after the destruction of Harrenhal and the death of House Hoare. He was cut down by King Aegon I Targaryen.

Victarion Greyjoy sailed to harlaw to collect Alannys Harlaw, who was to wed his brother, Balon Greyjoy. Harlaw was conquered by supporters of King Robert I Baratheon during the Greyjoy Rebellion.

Archmaester Hake came from Harlaw.

A Feast for Crows[]

Lord Rodrik Harlaw sends ravens around the Iron Islands calling for supporters of Asha Greyjoy as queen to gather at Ten Towers upon the death of King Balon Greyjoy. The Old Grey Gull spreads the word of a Kingsmoot around the island. Lord Baelor Blacktyde visits Harlaw to talk to Rodrik about the upcoming Kingsmoot.

Rodrik offers to name Asha the heir to Ten Towers if she backs down from claiming the crown. This would still, however, mean Harras Harlaw became Lord of Harlaw. She refuses the suggestion, however.

A Dance with Dragons[]

Asha fled Old Wyk for Harlaw after the raising of Euron Greyjoy as King. She there says farewell to her mother and hears that Euron has married her to Erik Ironmaker. She then leaves Harlaw for Deepwood Motte.
