Books[]

A Storm of Swords[]

Emmett travels with Cotter Pyke to Castle Black to participate in the election of the next Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Whilst there, he spars with Jon Snow, and bests him in several training sessions. During one session, Halder and Horse come to Emmett's aid when Jon gets distracted and doesn't realise his opponent has yielded.

A Feast for Crows[]

Emmett is named the new master-at-arms of Castle Black, succeeding Ser Endrew Tarth.

A Dance with Dragons[]

Jon oversees Emmett's training session with Horse and Hop-Robin, noting that, even though Cotter was upset at losing his finest swordsman, Emmett is a good teacher, who knows how to teach men how to fight and loves to do it.

Emmett is one of the men brought by Jon when he tries to escort Janos Slynt out of the castle, wanting the man to command Greyguard. Jon orders for Janos to be hanged when he disobeys his orders, and Emmett chokes him into submission when he tries to escape. It is Emmett that kicks Janos to his knees and places his head on the chopping block when Jon instead decides to behead the man.

Jon eventually names Emmett as the new commander of Long Barrow, where he sends the wildling spearwives. He names Leathers as Emmett's replacement as master-at-arms. Dolorous Edd tells Jon that Emmett has already started to bed Black Maris, one of the spearwives.
