Eddard dissuades the king from participating in the melee. Varys reveals that Cersei intended to have Robert murdered during the event in an "accident," and also confirms that Jon Arryn was poisoned by the knight who died the previous day.
Synopsis[]
Ned talks with Ser Barristan Selmy over the dead body of Ser Hugh of the Vale, who had died the day before, killed by Ser Gregor Clegane during the Hand's Tourney. They then visit the tent of King Robert I Baratheon, who is awake, and forcing his squires to attempt to put his armour on, although Ned notes that he is too fat for it. Robert then sends the two boys, both Lannisters, to speak with Ser Aron Santagar about fetching the 'breastplate stretcher', which is a joke that earns much laughter from Robert. Ned and Barristan then dissuade Robert from riding in the melee, by pointing out that no other man would dare to hurt him. Robert reluctantly agrees, eventually.
Ned sits with his daughter, Sansa, to watch the second day of jousting. They witness Sandor Clegane unhorsing Ser Jaime Lannister, and then the bout between Ser Gregor and Ser Loras Tyrell. Ser Loras uses a mare in heat, to rile up his opponent's stallion, and comes out the victor, though Gregor loses his temper, killing his own horse, and then attacking Loras, who is protected by Sandor. Eventually, Robert commands for them to stop, and Gregor storms away. Loras then awards Sandor the victory. The archery is won by an unknown archer named Anguy, and the melee is won by Thoros of Myr.
At the feast that evening, Ned talks with his other daughter, Arya, about her dancing master, Syrio Forel. He suggests that they replace Syrio with Jory Cassel, or even Ser Barristan, but Arya rejects these offers, and Ned knows better than to argue with her. That night, he is visited by a stranger, who turns out to be Varys. Varys informs him that Queen Cersei Lannister had been plotting to kill Robert in the melee, until Ned talked him out of riding, and that she will try again. He also reveals to Ned that Jon Arryn was killed using the Tears of Lys, and suggests that Jon's squire, Hugh, was the one who did the deed, and was killed by a Lannister bannerman before he had the chance to speak with Ned.
