Caraxes was a dragon, nicknamed the Blood Wyrm, he was ridden by Prince Aemon Targaryen and after by Prince Daemon Targaryen. During the Dance of the Dragons he was huge, formidable, fearsome, and experienced in battle.

Description[]

Caraxes was described as "a formidable huge blood-red dragon, fearsome and battle-savvy. Caraxes was a hostile, fierce and smart dragon. It was said he liked to spit fire.

Prince Aemon Targaryen[]

In His ridders said that Caraxes liked to spit fire.57AC, Caraxes was kept in the Dragonpit with three more dragons (Balerion, Meleys and possibly Syrax), he was known to be the fiercest of the young dragons that were in the pit. Prince Aemon Targaryen claimed Caraxes in 72 AC.

In 83 AC, Aemon, along with his brother Baelon and their father Jaehaerys, ended the attempted invasion of the stormlands by Prince Morion Martell of Dorne. Mounted atop their dragons, they destroyed the Dornish fleet before it could even make landfall. The war was fought and won in a day, and upon their return to King's Landing, Aemon, Jaehaerys, and Baelon received a riotous welcome, as they had won a war without losing a single man, something not even Aegon the Conqueror had been able to boast.

In 92 AC, Aemon and Caraxes led the assault on the Myrish pirates who had conquered the eastern half of Tarth during the struggle known as the Myrish Bloodbath. Aemon left for Tarth on the ninth day of the third month that year, shortly after learning that his daughter Rhaenys was pregnant with her first child. Aemon and Caraxes went ahead and arrived before The Sea Snake, Corlys Velaryon, and his fleet. On Tarth, Aemon met with Lord Cameron Tarth in the mountains located at the center of the island, where the Lord of Tarth had made camp. A pair of Myrish scouts eventually discovered the camp after seeing the smoke and flames of Caraxes as he devoured a dozen sheep, and recognized Lord Cameron. One of them took a shot at Lord Cameron with his crossbow. Although he missed Lord Tarth, Aemon, who had been standing by Lord Cameron's side, was struck in his throat, and drowned in his own blood. And so Caraxes had lost his first rider.

Prince Daemon Targaryen[]

Before 105, Prince Daemon Targaryen claimed Caraxes, and used to travel on his dragon across the Narrow Sea.

When Daemon's brother Viserys named his daughter Rhaenyra Princess of Dragonstone, the furious Daemon resigned from the gold cloaks and flew with Mysaria on Caraxes to Dragonstone, and so was not present for Rhaenyra's ceremony in the Red Keep.

Living on Dragonstone, Daemon impregnated his lover, Mysaria. He wanted to present her with a dragon egg, but the angry Viserys demanded that Daemon return the egg and return to his wife, Rhea, in the Vale. Daemon and Caraxes returned to the Vale and stayed there for less than a year.

The war of the Stepstones[]

In 106 AC, Daemon and Corlys Velaryon, his cousin's husband, allied together for a private war for the Stepstones, with Daemon desiring his own kingdom and Corlys wanting to rid the Stepstones of rule by the Triarchy. While Corlys provided the Velaryon fleet, Daemon flew on his dragon, Caraxes, and led an army of adventurers and second sons.

Daemon made many enemies from Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh, and he slew Craghas Drahar in 108 AC. After conquering all but two of the islands, Daemon declared himself King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea in 109 AC, being crowned by Corlys the Sea Snake. The Triarchy launched a massive fleet under Racallio Ryndoon to retake the isles, and Dorne joined the alliance against Daemon.

Return to the Dragonpit[]

Bored with ruling his meager kingdom, Daemon and Caraxes returned to the capital of King's Landing in 111 AC during the tourney that gave the greens and the blacks their names. Daemon and his niece, Rhaenyra, often flew to Dragonstone on their dragons, Caraxes and Syrax. And according to the fool Mushroom, they would also fly to the lonely rocks of the Narrow Sea to be naked with no one to bother them and scream "hooooooiiiiyahhhh."

Six months after Daemon's return, the brothers fell out again, Lyonel Strong, Lord of Harrenhal, counseled the livid Viserys that Daemon should be executed for treason. Eustace, however, reminded the council about the taint of kinslaying, and Daemon was exiled instead. Daemon returned to Bloodstone in the Stepstones and resumed his struggle over his barren kingdom.

Exiled[]

Daemon's wife, Rhea Royce, died from falling from a horse in 115 AC. Daemon abandoned the Stepstones and flew to the Vale of Arryn to claim Runestone, which had been Rhea's seat, but he was refused by House Royce. Sent away from the Vale by Lady Jeyne Arryn, Daemon turned to Driftmark, where he laid eyes upon the enchanting Laena Velaryon, the daughter of his friend, Lord Corlys, and he asked the Sea Snake for her hand in marriage. Daemon married Laena, because the marriage had been without consent of King Viserys I Targaryen, Daemon and Laena left Westeros for Essos. Mushroom claims the pair went to the ruins of Valyria, but more reliable sources indicate they toured the Free Cities, visiting Pentos, Volantis, Qohor, and Norvos. Wherever they went, people were delighted to see Caraxes and Vhagar, Laena's mount. They returned for some time to Pentos, where they learned that Laena was pregnant, causing their daughters Baela and Rhaena to be born there in 116 AC.

Back to Westeros[]

When the twins were half a year old, the family returned to Driftmark. Daemon mounted on Caraxes, brought Vhagar with him to Driftmark, while Laena came by ship. Daemon/Caraxes and Laena/Vhagar used to fly with Rhaenyra/Syrax and they also used to visit her in Dragonstone.

Atop Caraxes, Daemon challenged Aemond Targaryen to a duel at Harrenhal. Aemond rode Vhagar, who was larger than Caraxes. All four were killed in the fight over the God's Eye, when Daemon jumped from Caraxes in mid-air and killed Aemond, while Caraxes and Vhagar crashed. Vhagar drowned and Caraxes managed to swim ashore before sucummbing to its injuries.
