A Song of Ice and Fire Wiki

Princess Alyssa Targaryen was the fifth born child of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and Queen Alysanne Targaryen.

Appearance and Character[]

As a babe, Alyssa bore a resemblance to her deceased elder sister Daenerys when at the same age, however this faded with age. She became long-faced and skinny, with dirty blond tangled hair, and mismatched eyes, one violet and the other green. She had big ears and a lopsided smile. At the age of six she broke her nose, which healed back crooked.

As a child, she did not act like a girl. She would wear boy's clothes wherever possible, and preferred to ride, climb, and practice with swords over more ladylike pursuits.

She was strong, quick and spirited. She liked to boast that she was "as bawdy a wench as any barmaid in King's Landing".

History[]

Alyssa was born in 60 AC, the daughter of King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne. She was named for her grandmother, Alyssa Velaryon, who had died six years earlier.

As a young child, Alyssa would follow her elder brother Baelon wherever he went, much to his annoyance. After their younger sister Maegelle was born, she did the same, and attached herself to her elder sibling, much to Alyssa's annoyance, and Baelon's amusement. Alyssa would attempt to avoid her sister at all times.

While considering a bride for Prince Aemon, Alyssa's name was mentioned, as she was his eldest living sister, after the death of Princess Daenerys. Queen Alysanne refused, saying that Alyssa was meant for Baelon. In 72 AC, Alyssa attended a tourney at Duskendale, celebrating the wedding of Lord Darklyn to a daughter of Lord Theomore Manderly.

By 73 AC, Alyssa and Baelon had become inseparable, and plans for their wedding began. That same year, after their brother Vaegon severely insulted their sister Daella, Alyssa emptied a flagon of Arbor gold over his head. After Baelon started training Vaegon at arms, he once brought Alyssa to the courtyard dressed in mail, hoping that facing a woman may encourage Vaegon to try harder. Alyssa, recalling the incident with Daella, mocked him, as she danced around him, humiliating him, as Daella watched.

Alyssa married Baelon in 75 AC. Their bedding ceremony sparked much bawdy humour, as it was said Alyssa's sounds of pleasure could be heard in Duskendale. That same year, Alyssa claimed a dragon. The Dragonkeepers persuaded her not to claim Balerion, who had grown slow in his old age, and so she instead claimed Meleys, who had never been ridden before.

Alyssa and Baelon spent every hour they were not flying together, often in their bedchamber. In 77 AC, she gave birth to their first son, Viserys, and, although she was advised not to, she put him in swaddling clothes, and flew him into the sky on Meleys when he was nine days old. In 81 AC, she gave birth to their second son, Daemon. Within the fortnight, he had also been taken into the sky.

In 83 AC, after the end of the Fourth Dornish War, Alyssa was announced to be pregnant for a third time. The next year, she gave birth to a third son, Aegon. The labour was long and difficult, and Alyssa never truly recovered from the experience. She died within a year, aged twenty-four, with Baelon shattered by her death. Their son, Aegon, perished half a year later, not yet a year old.
