Prince Aemon Targaryen was the thirdborn child of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and Queen Alysanne Targaryen.
Appearance and Character[]
Aemon had "eyes as pale as lilac". The colour of his hair was rare, and had been even in Valyria; it was pale of colour and shone like white gold. He was regarded as tall and handsome, even as a boy of seven. He was taller than his brother Baelon, and stronger too. By the time he was fifteen years old, Aemon was six foot and two inches tall.
As a young child, Aemon was serious, cautious, and obedient. Before he was able to read, he loved to be read to. His mother often said, whilst laughing, that his first word had been "why?". He was a modest child, and was less quick and fierce as his younger brother.
History[]
Aemon was born in 55 AC on Dragonstone. The night following his birth, at the Queen's insistence, Jaehaerys placed a dragon's egg in the babe's cradle.
From the moment of his birth, Jaehaerys began referring to Aemon as his heir. When Alysanne pointed out that his sister, Daenerys, was his elder, Jaehaerys said that Daenerys would still be queen, when she married her younger brother and ruled by his side. The answer never entirely pleased Alysanne.
The smallfolk lined the streets of King's Landing upon the return of the king and queen, hoping to catch a glimpse of Aemon. Jaehaerys eventually climbed the ramparts to the main gate of the castle, and lifted Aemon up above his head. It was said that in response, a roar went up so loud that it could be heard across the Narrow Sea.
Aemon's brother, Prince Baelon, was born in 57 AC, and the two quickly grew as close as could be. A soon as Baelon could walk, he would follow Aemon everywhere. The two would train at swordplay in the courtyard, and their spirited bouts would attract many onlookers.
In 62 AC, Jaehaerys officially granted Aemon the title of Prince of Dragonstone and named him heir to the throne. At the feast that followed the announcement, Aysanne seated Aemon beside Jocelyn Baratheon. The two spent the entire evening talking and laughing together.
After the death of his elder sister, Daenerys, in 60 AC, another marriage match was searched for. Jaehaerys next turned to Aemon's next sister, Alyssa, but Alysanne said that she would instead be Baelon's bride. in 68 AC, Aemon's betrothal to Jocelyn was announced, and two years later they were married, in a ceremony that rivaled that of the Golden Wedding.
In 72 AC, Aemon was the victor in a squire's melee at Duskendale. He later distinguished himself in the lists, and was subsequently given his knighthood. Not long after his return to King's Landing, Aemon claimed the dragon Caraxes, who was the fiercest of the young dragons.
In 74 AC, Aemon became a father, after the birth of his daughter, Princess Rhaenys, on the seventh day of the seventh month, which was seen as an auspicious omen. Seven years later, upon his twenty-sixth nameday, Aemon was named Master of Laws and Lord Justiciar by his father. Aemon joined his father and brother in participating in the Fourth Dornish War in 83 AC, helping to torch the fleet of Prince Morion Martell whilst on dragonback. The war was fought and won in a single day. Upon their return to King's Landing, the three were met with a riotous reception, as they won a war without losing a single man.
In 88 AC, Aemon visited some castles of the Westerlands with his father, hoping to help repair the rift between his two parents, however he was unable to convince him to return to King's Landing.
In 92 AC, Aemon was chosen to lead the assault on Myrish pirates who had seized control of half of Tarth after the Myrish Bloodbath. Aemon departed King's Landing on the ninth day of the third month of that year, shortly after learning that his daughter was pregnant with his first grandchid. Aemon arrived before the fleet of his son-in-law, Lord Corlys Velaryon. he met with Lord Cameron Tarth in the mountains in the centre of the island, where Lord Tarth had made his camp. A pair of Myrish scouts discovered the camp, and one recognised Lord Cameron, and aimed a crossbow bolt at him. The bolt missed Lord Tarth, but struck Aemon through the throat, and the prince drowned upon his own blood.
Aemon's death caused a crisis of succession, as his only child was a daughter. Jaehaerys chose to pass over Rhaenys, as well as her child, and instead named Baelon as his chosen heir.
